ANATOMY OF A PIANO

SCALE AND DESIGN

The length of the strings, how thick they are, the tension to which each string is drawn and the gauge of the copper winding on the bass strings contribute to what is collectively known as a piano’s ‘scale design’. Changing any one of the attributes has a direct affect on the others, so an intricate balance determines the dimensions of the piano plate and string layout for each individual model of piano. The scale design is what gives each model of piano its own unique tonal qualities, and each manufacturer has its own preferred system of tonal architecture.
